Luka Zabric (12.08.1997) took his first musical steps at the Edgar Willems Music Centre (GCEW, institute), where, following preparatory music courses, he also completed lower music education on the recorder flute with Prof. Barbara Cefera along with solfeggio classes. At the age of twelve, he switched to the alto saxophone in the class of Prof. Adam Klemm, followed by two years at the Ljubljana Conservatory of Music and Ballet (jazz studies under Prof. Tjaša Perigoj and Lenart Krečič) and continued onto his undergraduate studies at the Jazz Institute of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz (KUG) with Prof. Julian Argüelles, where he graduated in September 2020. In June 2022, he completed his postgraduate studies in Music Performance at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC) in Copenhagen, Denmark. As part of his education there, he learned from (among others) established artists Lotte Anker, Kaja Draksler, and Christine Abdelnour, but just as importantly his peers as well – particularly the latter convinced him to stay in Copenhagen and cocreate the cultural scene there.
At GCEW, he was steered towards creating through improvisation very early on, initially mainly in the context of jazz and later in improvised music. Through acoustic manipulation of sound with so-called extended techniques and preparationson the saxophone, he seeks new and expands existing sonorities of his instrument, which represent the building blocks of his own improvisational and compositional practice.
To date, he has released five albums in various formations ranging from solo to quartet. In addition to frequent collaborations in various improvisational contexts, his most important projects, for which he is artistically (co-)responsible, include the groups The Gatherers, Yii, Mass of Debris, cičići, and Luk i Strela, with whom he regularly performs at various venues across Europe. In July 2022, he also joined the international Copenhagen-based musicians’ collective CRRNT [read as “current”], which works as an organiser and curator of concert series and festivals, a small label for contemporary and genre-diverse music both within and outside the collective, and since 2023 also as a band Undercurrent.
